The Troubleshooting screen allows you to change the default settings to troubleshoot potential AVG Antivirus functionality and compatibility issues.
Manage these settings from: Menu ▸ Settings ▸ Troubleshooting
We recommend to keep the default configuration. Only change these settings if you have an advanced understanding of AVG Antivirus functionality, or if AVG Support representatives request you to make changes for troubleshooting purposes. After making any changes, click OK to save your settings.
Note: For other troubleshooting information, refer to the Getting Started page.
Passive Mode disables all active protection, such as Shields and Firewall, so that you can use more than one antivirus program at a time without interfering with the performance of your PC or the reliability of antivirus detections. In Passive Mode, AVG receives all virus definition and program updates which allow you to manually run scans to check for issues on your PC, however AVG does not actively protect you.
This feature is disabled by default, unless you install AVG on a PC with another antivirus program installed. To manually activate Passive Mode, click the red slider (OFF) so that it changes to green (ON). Then, click OK and Restart now to confirm your changes.
If you want AVG Antivirus to actively protect you from malware and other security threats, ensure that Passive Mode is turned off and the following conditions are met:
Note: If AVG is the only antivirus software installed on your PC, only activate Passive Mode temporarily for specific troubleshooting purposes.
For troubleshooting purposes, you may want to restore your AVG Antivirus settings to the original values. Follow these steps to restore AVG Antivirus default settings:
Reset now removes all of your custom settings. This action cannot be undone.
Note: You can back up your settings in Settings ▸ Back up settings before you restore factory defaults. Read more..
If you experience issues sending or receiving emails when using Email Protection with an email client (such as Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird), you can troubleshoot by specifying the ports used by your email provider in the Mail section.
By default, standard port numbers are specified for each protocol as listed below:
If you or your email provider use different ports, type them into the text boxes next to the appropriate protocols to ensure that your emails are monitored by AVG. Use commas to separate multiple port numbers.
In the Ignored addresses text box, type the addresses of any servers or ports that you want to exclude from scanning, for example, smtp.example.com. If necessary, separate multiple addresses with commas.
Ignore local communication prevents AVG from scanning internal system communication between applications running on your PC. This option is ticked by default. Unticking this option configures AVG to scan all email communication, which increases security but may slow down the performance of your system.
A lot of my home customers use AVG free as their main anti-virus protection. Recently I have had a lot of calls from people who are being told that their AVG has expired and who are being prompted to pay for AVG protection.
So why is this happening?
When you run the FREE version of AVG you will periodically get a message pop up offering the latest version. This happened recently when it offered an update to AVG Free Summer 2013 version. Many people correctly clicked to install the update, however, during the installation; AVG offer to upgrade your version to the trial version of AVG Pro. It’s not immediately obvious but you need to decline this offer. If you don’t then your AVG free will be upgraded to Pro and will work fine for 30 days before informing you that it has expired and asking you to pay to continue to use it.
How Do I Switch From The Pro Trial To AVG Free?
Fortunately this is fairly painless.
The AVG installer window will now pop up and one of the options shown is to revert back to AVG Free. Click on this and follow the onscreen instructions. When complete you will be prompted to restart your PC and will be back on AVG Free edition.

This week I was introduced to the word 'Tanstaafl', which may sound like a new, bottle-conditioned Trappist beer but is actually an acronym for 'there ain't no such thing as a free lunch'. As we humans wend our weary way towards extinction, we're becoming increasingly suspicious of the word 'free' and the internet has played an important role in escalating our cynicism. Thousands of services claim to be free, but surreptitiously accumulate knowledge of our online gambling habit or our love of Delft pottery and somehow sell that information to third parties. As the now familiar warning goes: if something is free, YOU are the product – and that was highlighted this week in a bold announcement by Czech anti-virus company AVG. In summary: if you use its free software, it will be selling your data.
Data-flogging is an important income stream for many companies, but most of them do their best not to tell us about it, either by mumbling vague, corporate platitudes about our privacy being at the cornerstone of their business, or by burying the relevant information on page 39 of the terms and conditions. Not so with AVG; it drew attention to its new privacy policy with a chirpy YouTube video featuring a trad jazz soundtrack and the relevant details acted out by three people using mime. (Yes, mime.) If you've never seen someone trying to convey the idea of metadata using expressive gestures, it's definitely worth a look – but the message is clear. Personal data (such as name, address, phone number, IP address and location) may be shared 'in limited circumstances', while non-personal data (device brand, browsing and search history, advertisement history, apps used) will be shunted on to other companies willy-nilly. 'This is what we're doing, so take it or leave it,' it is, in effect, saying.
We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view.

With AVG the third-biggest global provider of antivirus software (after Microsoft and Avast) it's a significant statement, and many security experts have been urging the public to leave it rather than take it. After all, the provider of your antivirus software is in a unique a position of trust, so why continue using it if it has become 'spyware'? Some have gone further, mocking AVG's concept of 'non-personal' data; you could easily be identified from your browsing history, they say, despite the company's assurance that said data is anonymised. Others have smugly questioned why anyone could possibly still be using AVG when there's other, newer, more highly regarded free software on the market such as Panda, Bitdefender or Malwarebytes.
A more pertinent question, perhaps, is why so many of us are persistently unwilling to pay for a product that is, arguably, critical to our online safety. It seems that our cynicism about the 'free' status of software and services is ultimately overridden by the fact that we'd rather do anything than cough up money to use them. Often, the moment we cease to care about our privacy coincides with the moment we decline to tap in our 16-digit card number, and while AVG has been cast as the villain for daring to make money from a product that it provides for zero pounds a pop, at least it's being upfront about it.
With that slightly annoying mime video, it has come pretty close to saying 'Tanstaafl' to its customers: if you're not prepared to pay for useful things, you will end up paying in some other, more nebulous way that's becoming increasingly difficult to quantify.

There are many free anti-virus applications available, and some of them are actually pretty good, so why would you want to pay for this protection when you can protect your computer with free software or even download full-version free trials of subscription services? The answer is simple. Because you get what you pay for, and nothing will work for free for long.
Compare AVG Anti-virus to AVG Anti-virus Free. The free version offers protection while surfing the internet or social networking. It compares potential threats against its database of known threats and keeps your computer safe from infections. It does not scan files as they are being downloaded to your computer, nor does it offer firewall protection or scan your email for spam and suspicious links. If you share files, shop or bank online, you need more protection than a free version of antivirus software can offer.
AVG Anti-virus addresses the vast number of viral threats to which your computer is vulnerable if you spend any time connected to the internet or a network. Installing anti-virus software and running regular scans is the baseline of protection, but not all threats are known viruses. AVG scans your computer, comparing files to its database of known threats. It updates this database on a regular basis but also has an opt-in feature where users can share data on new infections as they occur. This zero-day availability allows the software to address new threats as they are introduced. It then adds those definitions to the database and updates all active subscriptions.
Viruses are not the only threat to your computer. Possibly the most detrimental to performance is the presence of malware and spyware operating on your hard drive in the background without your knowledge. AVG Anti-virus addresses these threats as well, and regularly clears away applications that reveal sensitive information stored on your machine. The free version does not.
If you spend a lot of time in chats or communicate through instant messenger clients, using the full version of AVG Anti-virus makes more sense than using the free version. Opening a chat window leaves your computer vulnerable to back-door attacks that won't be detected by the free version of the software. The full version offers a chat link shield and scans all communication ports on your computer instead of just the active port to prevent hidden access to your files.
One problem the full version has that the free version does not is the impact on boot-up time for the average computer. Once installed, the free version has a minimal impact on the length of time it takes for your computer to start. The full version causes this process to take a bit longer, but this is a small price to pay for the added protection the full version offers.
Another important consideration is the number of computers you need to protect with your subscription. As with most free software, AVG anti-virus Free includes a license for only one machine and is specifically for home use. Multiple licenses and protection for commercially used computers is available through paid subscription only.
Whether you use the free version or a paid subscription, AVG Anti-virus is a solid choice. It will protect your computer and, should you experience any problems with the software, tech support is available through live chat or email.
